Some Considerations Before Picking A Mug
How easy is it to clean
Cleaning is a very big part of owning a travel mug. Being able to easily throw it in the dishwasher and taking it fully apart for cleaning is very important. You don’t want to be drinking built up coffee and creamer. Another part of it really depends on how much time you want to take to clean your travel mug.
How long does it keep your coffee hot or cold
Most travel mugs have decent heat retention if they’re well built. They usually keep liquids hot for 5 hours or more and keep your drinks cold even longer. If you’re going to be using this just for coffee, you don’t really have to worry about this. Coffee starts tasting kind of off after an hour anyways.
Do you want one with a handle?
There are pros and cons to having one with a handle. Having one with a handle makes it way easier to hold. Some mugs are very wide around, meaning you’ll need either two hands to hold them or you’ll need some big hands.
If you do choose one with a handle it’ll add some difficulty when trying to fit in a cup holder. Some cup holders will not be able to accompany the added width of the handle. Most handled mugs will not fit a car’s cup holders, so if you’re going to be getting one be aware of this.
How easy is to open
Being able to open your travel mug with one hand is important to a lot of people. Having quick access to be able to drink with the press of a single button or switch is very convenient.
The Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug has two layers of stainless steel to keep your drinks either hot or cold. It’ll keep them hot or cold for up to 6 hours. This Zojirushi mug has models that either have a non-stick coating or a SlickSteel interior.
I would choose the SlickSteel interior models, such as this one, so you don’t have to worry about little bits of non-stick floating around your drink. They get the SlickSteel Finish by polishing the inside to treat and finish it.
What I like about this mug is that it has a locking mechanism. If you like to put your mug in a bag or something, it won’t just accidentally open up. It has to be unlocked and then you have to push a button for the lid release and open up. While having a locking mechanism, you can still open this mug with one hand, which is really convenient.
One minor annoyance with this mug, is that the button that opens up the mug is close to where you drink. It’s close enough that your bottom lip touches it. It’s kind of annoying, but I feel it’s not enough to deter you from getting this mug. The newer model of Zojirushi has changed the design of the lid to avoid this from happening, but it’s quite a bit pricier than this one.
|Has a lock so your lid doesn’t open up accidently||Button to open is close to where you would put your lips to drink|
|Mouthpiece is very easy to take apart and clean||The hole could be bigger where you drink|
|It has a 5 year warranty|
The Contigo Snapseal Byron mug will keep your drinks hot for up to 7 or cold for 18 hours. Like most standard mugs, it has a single button that you press to open it. Contigo claims that you can open it with a single hand, but the button is actually quite hard to press down. If you’re thinking about getting this one, be aware you will most likely need two hands to open it.
With that being said, there are many pros about this mug. It has a nice rubberized section on the middle of the body, to give you a little more handling. If you’re clumsy like me and you drop your mugs, you’ll like this little feature.
The lid of the Contigo is safe for dishwashing, but the body should be hand washed. If you wash the body in the dishwasher, the outer coating will start to chip.
Another thing about this travel mug is that the opening where the liquid comes out of could be a little bigger. The stream of liquid is pretty small, so if you want to drink a lot of your beverage in a short amount of time, taking off the lid is your best option.
Even with all these tiny problems, I think it’s still a pretty good product. The issues aren’t too big of a deal and it’s really cheap compared to some of the others on this list.
|Has a lifetime warranty||You need two hands to open|
|Rubberized grip makes it very easy to grip||The hole where you drink could be bigger|
|Has a very sturdy feel|
The Bear Claw Mug gives you the best of both worlds of not having a handle and having one. It comes with a removable handle that slides onto the body of the mug. This is great if you would like the comfort a handle provides and being able to fit the mug into cup holders. This mug also comes with a few extra accessories, including: a stainless steel straw, two lids, and a straw cleaning brush.
This mug will keep your coffee hot for 6 hours or if you’re drinking iced coffee that day for over 24 hours. It’ll hold up to 20 ounces of liquid or if you want it comes in 30 ounces as well.
My favorite thing about this mug is the two different lids that it comes with. One lid is a flip open and the other is a sliding style lid. It’s just nice that you have an option of how you prefer to open your lid. The sliding lid is a little easier to use compared to the flip one. The flip one kind of hangs too close to your face when it’s opened.
All in all this mug is constructed really well and works great. The one minor issue is the handle sometimes slips down the mug, but if you push up on it with a little force to make sure it sticks on to the body, you shouldn’t have any problems with it.
|Very great build quality||Handle slides down body sometimes|
|The lid doesn’t leak||Grease in cup, but goes away with a few washes|
|Accessories are a nice little add on along with the mug|
This is the first mug that has a permanent handle attached to the mug and it can hold up to 16 ounces of liquid. There is no official time for how long that it’ll stay hot, but others have noted it will stay decently hot for a few hours and then another few hours it’ll stay warm.
The lid on this mug is leak proof. It locks in with the body so tight, that it’s sometimes really hard to get off. I like how the locking mechanism works on this mug as well. It opens up easily by just turning the little switch on top like a key.
A cool feature that this mug has is that under the lid there is a tea hook. Just wrap the string around the hook a few times and you’re good to go. The lid can be easily disassembled for thorough cleaning.
It has been noted that there are a few issues with the mug for some, but not others. The main one is the handle becoming loose. This happens for some, but not others. Another thing is the paint chips after washing. Hand washing will prolong how long the paint stays on the mug if you care about the cosmetics. You can also choose the stainless steel finish on the outside to avoid the paint chipping.
|The lid is sealed tightly, this thing will not leak||The handle gets wobbly over time|
|Has a very nice weight to it, but is top heavy|
|Comes with a tea hook|
The Ello Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel Mug can hold up 16 ounces of liquid. It’ll keep your coffee hot for up to 5 hours or cold for 10. The handle on this has cork on the inside of it. It gives it more grip and it’s softer than having it be fully stainless steel.
The lid features a sliding lid, that you can easily open with one hand. Like most of the other mugs, the lid is dishwasher safe. You will want to thoroughly clean your lid by taking it apart. Liquids can get stuck underneath the sliding part that opens up where you drink. You’ll have to hand wash the body if you want to preserve the outer coating on the mug.
Although it looks smaller in some of the images, this mug is quite wide. If you plan to try and take this with you in the car, it will not fit in your cup holder. This is more of an at home use kind of mug.
Overall this is a very solid mug that does a great job of keeping your beverages either hot or cold. It does not leak which is something to look for in all mugs. And it also has a lifetime warranty.
|Handle is nicely padded with cork on the inside||Bottom of lid is hard to clean out|
|Has some very nice designs||Have to take off lid to get the last sips|
|Doesn’t have any lingering smells from having liquids in it||Very wide base, will not fit in most car cupholders|
Travel mugs can come in a variety of materials. Stainless steel is the standard material for most travel mugs and all the travel mugs on this list. It’s chosen as the main material for most mug bodies, because it’s very durable and easy to clean.
Now the lids are a different story. The ones that are made out of high grade plastic work better than ones that have a stainless steel lid. Stainless steel lids will also get hot when you pour coffee into your mug. Not being able to drink or even open your mug is a big problem. I would recommend choosing one that does have a lid made out of high grade plastic.
What’s the diameter of the mug
Having a mug sit nicely in a cup holder prevents accidental spillage. If your mugs diameter is very large, it’ll have a harder time fitting into cup holders. It’ll suck not being able to stick your travel mug in your car cup holder.
While having one that is smaller in diameter can lead to a spill happening. Of course most of the mugs on this list do have leak proof lids, but accidents and defects with products can happen.
How Most Mugs Work
Most mugs are vacuum insulated. Between the outer and inner layer of steel the mug is made of, the air is vacuumed out. Now that there is no air between the two layers, it’s harder for heat to transfer between them.
The Final Pick
Out of the 5 travel coffee mugs that I reviewed, the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug is my pick. It has everything that you’ll need in a travel mug.
It’ll keep you coffee hot long enough for a good portion of the day. The safety locking mechanism gives a second layer to protect from accidental spillage. This mug does not have a coating on the inside, but polished stainless steel. You won’t have to worry about little bits flaking off eventually and then finding them in your drink. The lid will come apart easy, so you can really get in and thoroughly clean things.
As said in the review above, it does have a small problem with the button to open the lid being a little close to the mouthpiece. If the mouthpiece really bothers you, Zojirushi does have a newer model that has addressed the button and mouthpiece problem.
Overall, the Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug is a very good choice for anyone who likes to take their coffee on the go and wants to keep it hot.
